For 2001, traction control for two-wheel-drive models and a composite box for four-wheel-drive 1500 extended cabs were offered, and GM’s OnStar service became standard on top-line LT models. The next year brought a new 1500 HD model, multiport fuel injection (for California emissions) on 4300 V-8s, standard automatic transmission on extended-cab models and, on some models, optional Quadrasteer, which turned the rear wheels opposite... Standard four-wheel-disc antilock brakes were an industry first for full-size pickups, and power rack-and-pinion steering became standard on rear-wheel-drive 1500 models. Also new was Autotrac four-wheel drive (standard on the top LT trim and available on midrange LS models), which automatically transferred torque to the front axle whenever rear-wheel slip was detected. To enhance the towing capability of four-wheel-drive 1500 extended- and crew-cab models, a new VortecMAX Performance Package combined a high-output 345-hp 6000 V-8 with a heavy-duty trailering package. Availability of the hybrid expanded to nationwide, and the SS package became available on two-wheel-drive trucks. Both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were upgraded, and a Tow/Haul mode for the automatic allowed the driver to change shift patterns while towing or hauling to keep the transmission cooler and reduce shift “busyness” on... An all-new Duramax 6600 turbo-diesel V-8 (good for 360 hp and a breathtaking 650 pounds-feet of torque) driving through an equally new Allison six-speed automatic debuted in HD Silverados.

With Chevy's recent announcement that the Avalanche is going away for 2013, we thought it would be nice to get behind the wheel of one to remind ourselves what this truck is all about. If the truck came out with properly proportioned wheels/tires, sales would have been off the charts. I have a new Avalanche, and the only turn-off I have now is that it looks too much like the Suburbans that yuppy soccer moms are driving - I would have preferred the "truck look" over the SUV look. For more about the exact options on the vehicle we have, you can Look at how awesome that Avalanche looks. When the production truck came out with the "inward" offset and smaller rims/tires, the truck looked really ungainly with plastic cladding, especially the 3/4 ton. Regarding the original Avalanche - search for a concept vehicle pic, or one with larger tires with more offset - that truck looks really tough with all the plastic cladding, sort of like the Raptor of the day. I might have skipped out on my F-150 Platinum and stayed with Chevy trucks instead if this was the Chevy Silverado. This and the Tahoe are two of the best looking Chevrolet's since the 72 and 98 ended. However, no matter what, we'll be collecting some good data and photos of the Avalanche along the way and letting you know about it. And feel free to offer any suggestions to us along the way--Washington D. C. to Los Angeles, Calif. I thought the first Avalanche looked like some road warrior nightmare with all of that plastic cladding. I skipped on the Chevrolet this time and bought an F-150 with the Platinum package. But we won't be driving the Avalanche like a normal road test, tooling around the same state on familiar roads. It was just like those bad looking Silverado's of that time.
