This has been a very useful book. It will be useful for the beginner or the professional. As with many of Mr. Vizard's books, it easily understood and very detailed. I have already had very rewarding results and still have much more material to experiment with. The material is very practical and for the hands on enthusiast.

For those of us who go out learning to hod rod the hardway, that is books, because we don't have the money to waste building one motor after another, this is a must have. If you read into the text, and take out a pen and paper to do a little figuring, this book will give you most everything you need to build an incredible race motor. The same principles for building race motors can be used to build street vehicles for economy, tow, and the ever sought sleeper rod.Vizard goes into great detail and geeks like me with a little math and physics background can get what we need pick the right cam. This principle will apply equally well to all engine types.If you don't want to do the extra leg-work the book will give a pretty good feel for cam profile selection in the small-block chevy without the math. In fact he doesn't suggest the extra work at all, but if you have the brains you can extrapolate more from this book than the other twelve motor books on my shelf...

Rump-Rump Cam!!!
If you want a nice potato-potato-potato idle in your small block Chevy and still have a very streetable cam, this 274H06 will do it. Has a short 218-218 @.050 duration but ground on a 106 LSA. It will work fine in a 8.5 c.r. 350 crate motor. My use is in a 260 hp GM crate motor in a 81 Corvette with a 4 speed and 3.73 gears. Has a nice lopey idle at 900 rpm's and has lots of low and mid range power. People I have talked have used in 327's also and with automatics and 3.08 rear ends and they like it very much. You get the big cam sound without the low speed blues that you get with other bigger duration camshafts.

great cam
This is a great cam that will not only give you that rumpity rump idle you crave but great performance as well. I installed it into my 69 camaro 350 with low compression crate motor heads and it is amazing. It pulls hard from 1800 rpm to redline and works fine with 3.08 gears although it is a 4 speed car. Works ok with stock springs too. Thumbs up from me!

There are Energizer cams suitable for the low RPM, high torque needs of a towing vehicle. While others are more suitable for daily drive with an eye on economy, and more radical camshaft selections, right up to a weekend warrior with a street and strip machine. Some selections would even work great for oval track racing. These popular Energizer cams are made available in either a "cam and lifter kit" or as "cam only". Both are priced to be the best buy in a true performance camshaft. The rough idle option: certain Energizer grinds incorporate very tight lobe separation angles of 106–108 degrees.
