The Sonic's lights are very bright and should provide good illumination for backing up. The reverse lights coming on when approaching the car are a nice touch for the driver of said vehicle, but they're definitely a bit annoying when you're... The reverse lights coming on upon unlocking the door light the surrounding area and especially useful for loading packages in the trunk. And that is why the quality of the approach lighting on our 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ is shocking.
